It was a pleasure to be in the list of Top Global Teacher Bloggers (http://ift.tt/1pr5CEC)
This month's question is quite sensitive.
What are the best examples you have seen of teachers closing the gender gap in education?
Girls and boys both are an important part of society. It is rightly said, when we educate a boy, only one person gets education whereas when we educate a girl, the whole family get education.
I teach Mathematics to senior grades. In my teaching learning journey I make sure to take care of the fact that equal chance should be given to boys and girls for learning the subject. It is a misconception that boys are better in learning and applying Mathematics. Such preconceived notions are to be debunked if gender equity has to be endorsed. Promoting gender equity in the classroom involves not only providing equal resources to both girls and boys but also providing equal opportunities to learn. Here through my post, I am sharing few examples which I tried for closing the gender gap in education.
Using Role Play
In my Math class, I used a role play to break this myth. A simple situation was created in a class wherein a family example was taking having two children, a boy and a girl. Mother, used to pamper the boy and used to supply him best of things. On the other hand the girl child in the family was taken for granted and was forced to do household work. The girl was very sharp. Despite her challenges at home, she kept reading books and learning calculations. One day, a milkman came to supply milk. The girl went out to collect it in a container. She observed that milkman did not fill the measuring flask up to the brim. It was 10% less filled. The milkman asked for the monthly bill. Mother, came out with the money. The girl explained the logic of paying 10% less bill as the milkman repeated the same everyday. Mother, was amazed to see her observation and fast calculation skills. She hugged her and said, “I will allow you to take up higher education”. Girl smiled and left for studying.
This example created an impact on children.
Giving a fair chance to girls for participation in Inter school Competition
An inter school competition was organised by a school on creating an architecture using string art. Girls were given a fair chance to participate and showcase their creativity. Girls were trained on learning cutting of wooden pieces, painting the model, doing hands on model making and presenting. Students won a prize during the competition. It instilled confidence in them and the whole process fostered creativity.
While framing questions taking care of using male and female names
It is a great way to close the gender gap in education. While framing questions I take care of the fact that, both genders names are used. Sometimes children are given a chance to frame questions involving both genders.

Inviting girls on the board for solving Math questions
In my Math class I invite girl students to solve questions on the board and record their videos. This helped in creating an atmosphere in the class that girls can also solve Math problems the way boys do.

I hope these small efforts and creative strategies will help solve the problem of gender gap in education.
