5 Tips for rigorous critical thinking and research skills to distinguish news from propaganda

How to we teach young people the rigorous critical thinking and research skills to distinguish news from propaganda? How do we ensure the next generation is one which communicates civically, values honesty, and recognizes reality?

As a teacher educator, I am happy to continue journey of Top Global Teacher Bloggers 2017. For this month's post, I am glad to ponder ideas of developing and enhancing critical thinking to distinguish between a news from a fake propaganda. The information is adding on the web with speed of light. It is easier to publish online. The same has incurred a challenge for all of us to know which information is right or wrong? Fake news sites and information has been proliferated with increase of social media .

Creating awareness about the fact that what we read or see online may not be true is the first step towards making young people know about the real fact. For doing so, we may share with them the case studies and news which went viral but was fake.

What happens actually?
Let us understand the fact. Let a person publishes some information/news. Using the earlier published information another person publishes some other news and the process continues by multiple people. In the process we get to read the same information published by many people. We start thinking that news to be correct.
If an information is viral on internet, it does not ensure that it is true. Keep on repeating this statement in the class.
Knowing the source of information is important. One must acquire a skill to differentiate between authentic and fake source of information. Any individual can create a digital news and publish the same. Knowledge about credibility of source is important to differentiate between real and fake. Developing a sense of finding links between the information is desirable. Before sharing the information confirm its authenticity is the rule.
Check the authenticity of website on which the information is shared. If you see a disclaimer, be skeptical about the news. Confirm it from other source.
Critical Thinking lesson plans Teaching of any subject involves knowledge and concepts. Activities and projects can be designed for developing critical thinking. When it becomes the attitude then it is easier for a person to decide when something is right or wrong.
We say to children to become a smart reader than a believer of anything which is published online.
Value based education In India we have a system of education in which along with academics we lay stress on developing and enhancing core values. As a part of the co scholastic teaching we design activities in which students imbibe values and learn the importance of skills for life. Students are given worksheets involving case studies. They are asked to write their views on what do they think about certain news/information given.
Real life examples For teaching to differentiate between news from propaganda, current examples and previous examples play an important role. Teacher can update the knowledge by going through media news and create discussions in the classroom. Sometimes it is good to invite an expert in the school to interact with students and to sensitize the young generation. It proves beneficial.
