Professional development of teachers is an ongoing process

Yet another very favourite question of mine was posed this month for the TOP GLOBAL BLOGGER POST. It is about teachers professional development.
Teaching is an art. Evolving as a better teacher is an ongoing process. As we all know that we are living in a changing world, connected world and I would be happy to call it as a collaborative world.
So in a CCC world (CHANGING CONNECTED COLLABORATIVE) world a teacher has to play different roles 24x7. That requires a dose of structured professional development along with developing an ownership of taking up self professional development.

Here are some ideas for 21st century teachers to take up professional development.
1. Explain them the need. Some questions for teachers.
Do you know students want to attend classes of which teacher?
Do you teach beyond text books?
Do you know about different types of learners, learning styles etc.?
Do you share your success and failure of classroom experiences with other teachers?
Do you use social networks for sharing and learning?
Have you attended any webinar?
Do you know about latest tools for teaching and assessment?
Do you know about flipped classrooms? STEM education?
Have you heard about SDG'S?

If the answer to these questions is no then you must start thinking of evolving as a better teacher through your own professional development.
2. Connect teachers online on a collaborative platform, first at local level then at global level.
3. Motivate teachers by giving them recognition /awards/rewards.
4. Empower teachers with latest tools and techniques.
There are different models of taking up PD.

School offers an yearly minimum 5 day PD from professionals/subject experts, we call them as resource persons in different areas. They are masters/experts in different fields who interact with teachers and conduct a workshop for a specific duration as decided by the school. Some of such workshops are very fruitful.

Teachers Conferences is yet another element which is there in the existing system in the name of professional development. Not all teachers get a chance to attend and  gain from it.
In my learning experience as a teacher, I have found that there is a huge gap between what teachers are teaching as per their knowledge and experience in the classroom and what is actually desirable from them to achieve the learning goals of education. So, again here comes a need of redefining the process of professional development. I would love to call it as "TEACHER EMPOWERMENT".

What I am dreaming as a  teacher is THE day when a teacher gets a chance to connect, collaborate, discuss and share with teachers all across the globe as per the needs. There is  a vast pool of free/paid knowledge via Internet. The issue is lack of awareness. lack of grit, lack of time/planning to make effective use of such a resource and opportunity. Ongoing professional development opportunities are not sufficient to fulfill the desired goals of education. We need to empower teachers to own the responsibility of their self professional development.
I believe as a teacher there are 4 strands of professional development.
1. Subject expertise- It talks about the correct knowledge of content and various assessment ways.
2. Pedagogy- It talks about how the content is delivered and a lesson can be prepared well for all types of learners.
3. Enrichment- Going beyond the text book, exploring the unknown is something which is missing from most of the classrooms. Teachers needs to be empowered with skills of taking up an action research.
4. Using ICT for CCC and enhancing 4C's (Creativity, Critical thinking, Communication and Collaboration)- We are living in 21st century and still you can witness classrooms in which teachers are teaching through traditional chalk and talk or discussions only. Teachers effectively can make use of ample opportunities which are provided online for self professional development.
